The Alamo is a very old building in San Antonio, Texas, United States. It was first a Spanish mission, which is like a church built by Catholic missionaries. These missionaries helped native people learn about their faith. The Alamo was planned in 1718 but was not fully built until 1744. Its first name was San Antonio de Valero Mission.

The Famous Battle of the Alamo
The Alamo is most famous for a big fight called the Battle of the Alamo. This battle happened in 1836. About 187 brave men were inside the Alamo. They came from Texas and other places. These men were fighting for independence for Texas from Mexico.
The Fight for Freedom
The small group of Texan fighters faced a huge army. About 5,000 Mexican troops attacked the Alamo. Their general was named Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The battle was very tough. On March 6, 1836, the Mexican army won. All 189 Texan defenders were killed.
"Remember the Alamo!"
After the battle, the phrase "Remember the Alamo!" became a famous battle cry. It helped inspire Texans to keep fighting in the Texas Revolution. This cry reminded everyone of the brave people who died there.
The Alamo Today
Many years after the battle, the government of Texas fixed up the Alamo. It became a National Historic Landmark in 1960. This means it is a very important place in American history.
A World Heritage Site
On July 5, 2015, the Alamo also became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a special title given to places around the world that are very important to all of humanity. Today, people can visit the Alamo and learn about its history.
