Sir Alan Campbell, born on 8 July 1957, is a politician from Britain. He is a member of the Labour Party. Since July 2024, he has been the Chief Whip of the House of Commons. This means he helps manage his party's members in Parliament. He is also the Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury.
Sir Alan has been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Tynemouth since 1997. An MP is someone elected to represent a specific area in the UK Parliament.

Early Life and Education
Alan Campbell was born in Consett, England. He went to Blackfyne Grammar School in his hometown. After school, he studied politics at Lancaster University.
He then went to the University of Leeds to get a teaching qualification. Later, he earned a master's degree in history from Northumbria University (then called Newcastle Polytechnic).
Starting His Career
Alan Campbell began his career as a history teacher in 1981 at Whitley Bay High School. After eight years, he became the head of the sixth form at Hirst High School in Ashington. A sixth form is where older students (usually 16-18 years old) study before university. He worked there until he was elected to the House of Commons.
Parliamentary Career
Becoming an MP
Alan Campbell was first elected to Parliament in the 1997 general election. He became the MP for Tynemouth. He won with 55.4% of the votes. This gave him a majority of 11,273 votes, meaning he had that many more votes than the person who came second.
He gave his first speech in Parliament on 2 June 1997. This is called a "maiden speech."
Roles in Government
After being re-elected in 2001, he became a Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS). A PPS is like an assistant to a government minister. He worked for Gus Macdonald at the Cabinet Office. In 2003, he became PPS to Adam Ingram at the Ministry of Defence.
In 2005, he was re-elected again. He then joined the government of Prime Minister Tony Blair as an assistant whip. He was promoted to a full whip in 2006. On 5 October 2008, he was promoted to a more senior role at the Home Office. He became a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Crime Reduction.
In Opposition
In the 2010 general election, Alan Campbell was re-elected for Tynemouth. When Ed Miliband became the leader of the Labour Party, Sir Alan was appointed Deputy Chief Whip. He worked under Rosie Winterton, who was the Chief Whip.
He was re-elected in the 2015, 2017, and 2019 general elections. During these years, the Labour Party was not in government. Sir Alan continued to serve his constituency and his party in Parliament.
Back in Government
In the 2024 general election, Sir Alan Campbell was re-elected once more. He won with an increased majority of 15,455 votes.
The Labour Party won a large victory in this election. On 5 July 2024, Prime Minister Keir Starmer appointed Sir Alan Campbell as the Chief Whip of the House of Commons. He also became the Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury. These are important roles in the new government.
Personal Life
Sir Alan Campbell married Jayne Lamont in August 1991 in Newcastle upon Tyne. They have a son and a daughter.
In May 2000, he had a medical procedure at Newcastle General Hospital. It was to remove a non-harmful growth from his spine.
He was honored with a knighthood in 2019. This means he can use the title "Sir" before his name.
