Sir Alan Campbell is an important British politician. He has been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Tynemouth since 1997. An MP is a person elected by people in their local area to represent them in the House of Commons, which is a part of the UK Parliament. He is a member of the Labour Party.

Since September 2025, Sir Alan has held two very important jobs: the Leader of the House of Commons and the Lord President of the Council. The Leader of the House of Commons helps manage the daily business and schedule of Parliament. The Lord President of the Council is a senior government minister. Before these roles, from July 2024 to September 2025, he was the Chief Whip of the House of Commons. The Chief Whip's job is to make sure that members of their political party vote together on important issues. He was also the Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury during that time.

His Early Life and Education

Alan Campbell was born on 8 July 1957 in a town called Consett in England. He went to Blackfyne Grammar School there. After school, he studied politics at Lancaster University, where he earned a degree.

He then continued his education at the University of Leeds to get a teaching qualification. Later, he studied history at Northumbria University (which was then called Newcastle Polytechnic).

Sir Alan started his career as a history teacher at Whitley Bay High School in 1981. After eight years, he became the head of the sixth form at Hirst High School in Ashington. He worked there until he was elected to Parliament.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

His First Elections

Sir Alan Campbell was first elected as an MP in the general election of 1997. He represented the area of Tynemouth. He won with a large number of votes, showing that many people in Tynemouth wanted him to be their representative. His first speech in Parliament was on 2 June 1997.

He was re-elected in the 2001 and 2005 general elections. Each time, he continued to represent the people of Tynemouth.

Working in Government

After the 2001 election, Sir Alan became a Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS). This role means he helped a government minister named Gus Macdonald. Later, he became a PPS for Adam Ingram at the Ministry of Defence.

In 2005, he joined the government led by Prime Minister Tony Blair as an assistant whip. He was promoted to a full whip in 2006. In October 2008, he became a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Home Office. This meant he had a specific role in the government department responsible for law and order.

Working in Opposition

In the 2010 general election, Sir Alan was re-elected as MP for Tynemouth. After this election, the Labour Party was no longer in government, so they became the main opposition party. Sir Alan was appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the Labour Party, working with the Chief Whip, Rosie Winterton.

He was re-elected in the 2015, 2017, and 2019 general elections, continuing his work as an MP and as Deputy Chief Whip for a long time.

Back in Government

In the 2024 general election, Sir Alan Campbell was once again re-elected as the MP for Tynemouth. The Labour Party won this election by a large amount, and Keir Starmer became the new Prime Minister.

On 5 July 2024, Prime Minister Keir Starmer appointed Sir Alan as the Chief Whip of the House of Commons and Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury. He served in these important roles until 5 September 2025, when he was appointed to his current positions as Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council.

A Look at His Personal Life
