Alan Leslie Gillis (born 22 September 1936 – died 6 May 2022) was an important Irish politician and a leader for farmers. He was a member of the Fine Gael political party.

Leading Farmers
Before becoming a politician, Alan Gillis was a strong voice for farmers. From 1990 to 1994, he was the president of the Irish Farmers' Association. This group works to support farmers and make sure their needs are heard. As president, he helped many farmers in Ireland.
Representing Ireland in Europe
In 1994, Alan Gillis was elected to the European Parliament. This is a big group of politicians from different countries in Europe. They work together to make laws and decisions that affect all of Europe. He represented the Leinster area of Ireland.
While in the European Parliament, he was part of a special group called the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development. This committee focused on farming and country life issues across Europe.
Later Political Life
Alan Gillis served in the European Parliament until 1999. In the election that year, he did not win his seat again. Another person from his own party, Avril Doyle, was elected instead.
Later, in 2007, he tried to become a member of the Irish Parliament (called the Dáil). He ran for election in the Kildare South area but was not successful.
Alan Gillis passed away on 6 May 2022.
