Alan fitz Walter (born around 1140, died 1204) was an important Scottish nobleman. He inherited the title of High Steward of Scotland from his father. This was a very important job, like being a chief manager for the King of Scotland. Alan was also known for possibly joining a big journey called a Crusade.

Alan's Life and Role
Alan fitz Walter was the son of Walter fitz Alan. He took over his father's role as Steward of Scotland in 1178. He served William the Lion, King of Scots until his death in 1204.
Important Lands and Castles
During Alan's time, his family gained control of the Isle of Bute. He might have been the person who built Rothesay Castle on the island. This castle was important for protecting the area.
Journeys and Crusades
It is said that Alan went with King Richard the Lionheart on the Third Crusade. This was a long journey to the Middle East. He supposedly returned to Scotland in July 1191. However, there are no records from that time that confirm he actually went.
Supporting Important Groups
Alan became a supporter of the Knights Templar. This was a powerful group of Christian knights. He helped them become more influential in Scotland. There is no proof that he officially joined the Templars himself.
Alan also witnessed important documents for King William the Lion. This shows his high standing in the kingdom. He was buried with his father at Paisley Abbey.

His first wife was named Eva. Some historians believe she was the daughter of Sweyn Thor'sson. Alan and Eva did not have any known children.

Alan's second wife was Alesta. She was the daughter of Morggán, Earl of Mar. Together, Alan and Alesta had several children:

- Walter Stewart, 3rd High Steward of Scotland: He became the next High Steward after Alan. Walter married Bethóc, who was the daughter of Gille Críst, Earl of Angus. Walter died in 1246.
