Park History

This park started out in 1925. It was first created by Huron County. In 1927, it officially became a state park.

During the 1940s, a group called the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) worked at the park. The CCC was a program that helped young men find jobs during the Great Depression. They built the park's Outdoor Center.

In 1944, the park was renamed. It was given the name Albert E. Sleeper State Park. This was to honor Albert E. Sleeper, who used to be the Governor of Michigan. He was the one who signed the law that created Michigan's state park system.
