Early Life and Education

Albert Harjo was born on September 25, 1937, in Hanna, Oklahoma. This area is part of the Muscogee Indian Reservation. He attended a school called Jones Academy in Hartshorne, Oklahoma. Later, he went to Chilocco Indian Agricultural School. This school was located north of Ponca City, Oklahoma.

After finishing high school at Chilocco, Albert Harjo joined the United States Marine Corps. He served his country and was honorably discharged in 1959.

His Art Style

Albert Harjo's paintings often showed scenes from his own life. He also painted about his friends, family, and neighbors. He used their everyday experiences as inspiration.

Harjo painted in a style known as the Bacone school. This is a special way of painting called "Flatstyle." It was developed by Native American artists at Bacone College.
