Playing Career
Starting at Barcelona
Albert Jorquera was born in Bescanó, a town in Girona, Catalonia, Spain. His football journey began in FC Barcelona's youth program in 1994. By 1998, he was playing for the club's C team. A year later, he moved up to the B team, which is a step closer to the main team.
To get more experience, Barcelona sent him to play for other teams temporarily. This is called being on "loan." He played for AD Ceuta and CE Mataró. When he returned to Barcelona's B team, he was their main goalkeeper.
Joining the First Team
Jorquera made his first appearance in La Liga, Spain's top football league, on 17 January 2004. He played against Athletic Bilbao and the game ended in a 1–1 draw. He played so well that he was named the best player of the match.
The next season, he officially joined Barcelona's main team. He became the backup goalkeeper to the team's star, Víctor Valdés.
Challenges and Triumphs
In March 2007, Jorquera signed a new contract to stay with Barcelona. But later that year, he suffered a serious injury to his right knee while playing in a friendly match. The injury, to his anterior cruciate ligament, meant he couldn't play for six months.
Despite the setback, Barcelona showed faith in him. In March 2008, they gave him a new contract that lasted until 2010. On 9 December 2008, he started in a UEFA Champions League match against FC Shakhtar Donetsk. Barcelona lost 2–3, but it was an important game for Jorquera. The team was resting its main players for the big match against Real Madrid a few days later.
Final Season and Retirement
On 25 August 2009, Jorquera joined Girona FC, a team in Spain's second division. He was the starting goalkeeper for most of the season. However, at the age of 31, he decided to retire from playing football for personal reasons.
Coaching Career
After he stopped playing, Jorquera didn't leave football completely. In 2014, he became a goalkeeping coach for a team called UE Llagostera.
He later worked as an assistant coach for several teams, including the youth teams at Barcelona and FC Sion in Switzerland. In 2018, he joined FC Andorra as an assistant coach. In 2020, he got his first job as the main coach at FC Santa Coloma. A year later, he returned to Llagostera, which had been renamed UE Costa Brava.
Style of Play
Jorquera was a tall and reliable goalkeeper. He was known for his quick reflexes, which helped him make difficult saves. He was also good at anticipating where the ball would go. Throughout his career, people admired his hard work, strong character, and positive attitude.
Personal Life
Jorquera's cousin, Marc Crosas, was also a football player who started at Barcelona's youth academy.
After retiring from football, Jorquera used his degree in gemology (the study of gems) from the University of Barcelona. He joined his family's jewelry business.
In 2011, he also became involved in local politics. He was on a list of candidates for the city council elections in Girona.
