Albert Lamorisse (born January 13, 1922 – died June 2, 1970) was a French filmmaker, producer, and writer. He became famous for his short films, which he started making in the late 1940s. He also created the popular board game Risk in 1957.
Life and Work
Albert Lamorisse was born in Paris, France. He first became well-known for directing and producing White Mane (1953). This short film tells the story of a young boy who becomes friends with a wild white horse. The horse lives in the marshes of Camargue, France.
Lamorisse's most famous work is the short film The Red Balloon (1956). This movie won him the top prize, the Palme d'Or, at the Cannes Film Festival. He also won an Oscar for writing the Best Original Screenplay in 1956 for this film.
Lamorisse also wrote, directed, and produced other well-liked films. These include Stowaway in the Sky (1960) and Circus Angel. He also made documentaries like Versailles and Paris Jamais Vu.
Besides films, he invented the popular strategy board game Risk in 1957. It was first called La Conquête du Monde, which means The Conquest of the World.
His Final Film
Albert Lamorisse sadly died in a helicopter crash in 1970. This happened while he was filming a documentary called Le Vent des amoureux (The Lovers' Wind). He was on a helicopter tour of Iran at the time.
His son and wife finished the film after he passed away. They used his notes to complete it. The movie was released eight years later and was nominated for an Oscar for best documentary. The title The Lovers' Wind is called Bad-e Saba in Persian. A saba wind is a gentle breeze from the northeast. It often symbolizes the soft whispers of lovers.
Albert and Claude Lamorisse had three children: Pascal, Sabine, and Fanny. Pascal and Sabine even appeared in The Red Balloon.
