Albert Vann (born November 19, 1934 – died July 14, 2022) was an important American politician. He was a member of the New York City Council. This council helps run New York City.
He represented the 36th district in Brooklyn, New York. This area includes parts of Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights. Albert Vann was a member of the Democratic Party.
Early Life and Education
Albert Vann was born in Brooklyn, New York City, on November 19, 1934. His parents, Nina and Benjamin, moved to New York from North Carolina. They were part of a big movement called the Great Migration. This was when many African Americans moved from the Southern U.S. to the North.
He went to Franklin K. Lane High School. After high school, he joined the United States Marine Corps. He served there from 1952 to 1955.
After his military service, Albert Vann went to college. He earned a degree in business from Toledo University in 1959. Later, he earned two master's degrees. One was in education from Yeshiva University. The other was in guidance counseling from Long Island University.
Albert Vann worked as a teacher and school leader for many years. He helped students in New York public schools. He was also a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
He helped start Medgar Evers College. This college is part of the City University of New York. He also helped create the African American Teachers Association. This group supported Black teachers. Vann also taught at Vassar College's Urban Center for Black Studies.
Political Career

Albert Vann began his political career in 1975. He became a member of the New York State Assembly. This is a group of lawmakers who make rules for New York State. He served in the Assembly until 2001.
Later, he switched roles with another politician, Annette Robinson. This happened because of "term limits." Term limits mean a politician can only serve for a certain number of years.
In November 2001, Albert Vann was elected to the New York City Council. This council makes laws for New York City. He represented the same 36th district in Brooklyn. He stayed on the City Council until 2013.
In 2009, Albert Vann ran for re-election. He won against Mark Winston Griffith. Term limits meant he could not run again in 2013. Robert Cornegy took his place on January 1, 2014.
Albert Vann often spoke out against unfair treatment. He believed in equal rights for all people. He worked to address issues like racism in society. In 2009, he voted to allow the New York City Mayor and City Council members to serve longer terms.
Personal Life and Death
Albert Vann married Mildred Cooke in 1967. They had four children together. He lived in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.
Albert Vann passed away on July 14, 2022. He was 87 years old. Many important political leaders remembered him. These included Letitia James, Eric Adams, Adrienne Adams, and Hakeem Jeffries.
