Early Life and First Steps
Albert Wolsky was born in Paris, France. During World War II, his family moved to the United States. They wanted to escape the German occupation of France.
After finishing college at the City College of New York, he joined the army. He served from 1953 to 1956, mostly in Japan. When he came back to the U.S., he first worked in his father's travel agency. But he soon decided to follow his passion for design. He became an assistant to a well-known costume maker named Helene Pons. His very first show with her was Camelot.
Designing for Stage and Screen
Albert Wolsky became a highly respected costume designer. He worked on many shows for Broadway and also for the movie industry.
Broadway Costumes
He started his career in theater by helping other designers. He worked on plays like The Odd Couple (1965) and Fiddler on the Roof (1964). His first play as the main costume designer was Generation in 1965. He designed costumes for many plays and musicals. These included The Sunshine Boys (1972) and Sly Fox (1976). In 2012, he designed costumes for the Broadway show The Heiress.
Movie Magic
Wolsky's first movie was The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter in 1968. He went on to design costumes for many popular films. Some of these include Harry and Tonto, The Turning Point, and Grease. He also worked on Manhattan.
He teamed up with famous director Bob Fosse for All That Jazz. This film earned him his first Academy Award. He worked with Fosse two more times after that. His second Academy Award was for the movie Bugsy in 1991. He has also been nominated for his work on films like Across the Universe (2007) and Revolutionary Road (2008).
In 2010, Albert Wolsky gave his costume design sketches to the Margaret Herrick Library. This library is part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It helps preserve the history of movies.
