Alberta Beach is a small village in central Alberta, Canada. It is located west of Edmonton. You can find it on the southeast shore of Lac Ste. Anne. It's about 8 kilometers (5 miles) west of Highway 43.
This village is a popular spot for tourists and people looking for fun activities. It's also famous for the Lac Ste. Anne Pilgrimage. This is a very important event for Indigenous people. It includes Cree, Dene, Blackfoot, and Métis Roman Catholics. Many people from Edmonton, Alberta, also visit Alberta Beach for weekend getaways.
Alberta Beach is special because its official name is simply Alberta Beach. Most other towns and villages in Alberta include their status in their name. For example, they might be called the Village of [Name]. Alberta Beach changed its status from a "summer village" to a regular "village" on January 1, 1999. At that time, it decided to keep its simple name.
History of Alberta Beach
In 1912, the Canadian Northern Railway built a train line through what is now Alberta Beach. The railway company would bring its employees here for picnics and holidays. By 1920, the area became a "summer village." They built a dance hall, a large wooden pier, and several cabins. Other companies also started bringing their employees to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere.
People loved the area so much that a special train, called the Moonlight Express, began running. It picked up people in Edmonton on Saturday mornings. It would take them to Alberta Beach. Then, it would bring them back to Edmonton on Sunday night.
Soon, many people started buying land and building their own cabins. Small businesses also began to open. On January 1, 1999, Alberta Beach officially changed from a summer village to a full village. Today, about 864 people live there all year round. However, during long weekends, the population can grow to over 3,000 visitors! The village now has a hotel and many small shops.
