He faced very difficult conditions for several months. He died in 1974 from a heart attack while still in prison. His daughter, Michelle Bachelet, later became the President of Chile two times.

A Life in Service

Alberto Bachelet was born in Santiago, the capital city of Chile. His parents were Alberto Bachelet Brandt and Mercedes Martínez Binimelis.

Early Military Years

In 1940, Alberto Bachelet began his military service. He earned a special scholarship to the School of Aviation Captain Manuel Avalos Prado. This was a big achievement for him.

He studied alongside Gustavo Leigh, who would also become an important officer. Both Bachelet and Leigh became officers in the Chilean Air Force.

Working Abroad

In 1962, during the time of President Jorge Alessandri, Bachelet was given an important job. He became a military attache at the Chilean Embassy in Washington D.C., USA. This meant he represented Chile's military in another country.

In 1972, President Salvador Allende appointed him to a new role. Bachelet became the secretary of the National Supply and Marketing (DINAC). This job involved managing how goods were supplied and sold in the country.

The 1973 Coup

During 1973, General Bachelet was working in the Accounts department of the Chilean Air Force (FACH). On September 11, 1973, a military takeover happened in Chile. This event was led by the commander-in-chief, Augusto Pinochet.

General Bachelet was against this takeover. He was arrested on the same day, September 11, 1973, at the Ministry of Defense. He was released that night, but his home was searched a few days later. On September 14, he was arrested again.

Imprisonment and Challenges

He was held at the Air War Academy of the FACH. Here, General Bachelet faced difficult questioning and harsh treatment. This was done by some of his own military colleagues. Later, he was moved to the FACH Hospital.

In October 1973, he was allowed to return home under house arrest. However, on December 18, he was arrested for a third time. Many other Air Force officers and non-commissioned officers were also arrested. They were put on trial for "treason."

General Bachelet died on March 12, 1974. He suffered a heart attack while he was in prison in Santiago. He had been facing very difficult conditions during his time there.
