Alberto Ponce (born Alberto González Muñoz) (13 March 1935 – 26 July 2019) was a famous Spanish classical guitarist and teacher. From 1962, he lived and taught in France, sharing his amazing musical talent with many students.
Biography
Alberto Ponce started learning music from his father. As a child, he went to the Municipal Conservatory in Barcelona, Spain. There, he studied not only guitar but also piano, harmony, and chamber music. He did very well and graduated with honors.
A well-known music expert, Emilio Pujol, suggested he study at the Lisbon Conservatory. After three years, Ponce improved his guitar skills even more with Pujol at the Accademia Chigiana di Siena. This helped him learn a lot about old Spanish music from a time called the Spanish Golden Age.
In 1962, Alberto Ponce won first prize in a guitar competition in Paris. It was a big deal! In the same year, Alfred Cortot, who was in charge of the École Normale de Musique in Paris, asked him to teach there. Ponce became a very important teacher, creating a famous school for modern guitar music. Many great guitarists learned from him.
For many years, Alberto Ponce was special because he played both very old music and brand-new music. He inspired many artists, including famous composers like Maurice Ohana and guitarists like Roland Dyens. He also taught at the National Conservatory of Paris.
