Becoming President
Albino Jara was a military officer. He fought as a Major in a big conflict in 1904, supporting the Liberal Party. He felt that the Liberal Party was not doing enough. He was especially unhappy during the time Manuel Gondra was president.
Because of his strong feelings, Albino Jara, who was now a Colonel, decided to act. On February 21, 1911, he led a military takeover against President Gondra. This takeover was successful. He then became the temporary president of Paraguay on January 19, 1911.
Challenges and Resignation
However, Albino Jara's time as president was not easy. The way he came to power caused a lot of problems. Many people also did not like him. This led to a new rebellion starting.
The rebellion began in Concepción on February 21, 1911. It was led by Adolfo Riquelme and Major Alfredo Medina. Many people joined this rebellion. It reached its peak on March 7, 1911. About 2,000 government soldiers fought against 800 rebels in Yuty. The government soldiers won this battle.
The rebellion faced more difficulties when Adolfo Riquelme and 11 of his helpers were captured. They were all executed. Soon after, on March 20, 1911, a special rule called martial law was put in place. This meant the military took control of the government.
Albino Jara lost much of his power and control during this time. Because of the ongoing unrest and his loss of support, he decided to resign from his position.
