The Albizzi family (Italian pronunciation: [ˈalbittsi]) was a very important and powerful family from Florence, Italy. They originally came from Arezzo. For many years, they were big rivals of other strong Florentine families, especially the Medici.
The Albizzi family was at the center of Florence's government from 1382 to 1434. This was a time when a small group of powerful families, known as an oligarchy, ruled the city. They became very influential after a big workers' uprising called the Ciompi revolt. The Albizzi were also active members of the wool guild, which was Florence's important wool business group. Guilds were central to how the Republic of Florence was run during the medieval period. Members of these guilds were often the most powerful people in Florence's economy and politics.

Key Members of the Albizzi Family
Some of the most famous and influential members of the Albizzi family were Maso and his son Rinaldo degli Albizzi. They played a big role in Florentine politics.
Maso and Rinaldo degli Albizzi
Maso and Rinaldo were key figures in the Albizzi family. Rinaldo (1370–1442) tried to stop the rise of Cosimo de' Medici, another powerful Florentine leader. In 1433, Rinaldo even managed to have Cosimo de' Medici sent away from Florence.
Luca degli Albizzi
Luca degli Albizzi was another son of Maso. He was in charge of Florence's galley ships. Luca's personal diary is a valuable source of information for historians studying that time. Interestingly, Luca was a loyal friend to Cosimo de' Medici. Because of this friendship, Luca was allowed to stay in Florence when most of his family, including his brother Rinaldo, were sent into exile by the Medici in 1434. Later, in 1442, Luca Albizzi even became the Gonfaloniere of Justice, which was a very high position in Florence's government. He remained a key supporter of Cosimo de' Medici during this time.
Giovanna degli Albizzi
Giovanna degli Albizzi was married to Lorenzo Tornabuoni. Both Giovanna and Lorenzo were important supporters of art in Florence during the late 15th century. A famous portrait of Giovanna was painted in 1488.
Filippo degli Albizzi
Filippo degli Albizzi was a naturalist from Florence who lived in the 18th century. A type of tree, Albizia julibrissin, was named after him.
Albizzi Family Palace
The family's main home, known as a palazzo, was located in a part of Florence called Borgo degli Albizzi. This palace was rebuilt in the early 16th century, after the family returned to Florence.
