Alcabón is a small town in Spain. It is located in the province of Toledo, which is part of the Castile-La Mancha region. In 2022, about 743 people lived there.

What's in a Name?

The name "Alcabón" comes from the Arabic language. It might mean "the cove." People think it got its name because there were some old farmhouses nearby. That's why it was once called "Alcabón Homes."

Where is Alcabón?

Alcabón is in an area called Torrijos. It is next to other towns like Santo Domingo-Caudilla, Carmena, and Santa Olalla. All these towns are in the Toledo province.

Alcabón Through Time

Early Days

We know that Alcabón has been around since at least 1095. In 1156, King Alfonso VII of Castile gave the town to Count Nuño Petriz. The count then traded the Alcabón castle to the archbishop of Toledo, Don Juan. He got another piece of land in return.

Royal Connections

Later, in 1179, Queen Eleanor of England gave Alcabón to a special chapel. This chapel was called St. Thomas Cantuariense. It was inside the Santa Maria de Toledo cathedral. Alcabón stayed with the chapel until 1482. Then, it was sold to Gutierre de Cardenas, who was the first Duke of Maqueda.

Tough Times

During the War of Spanish Independence, Alcabón faced a difficult period. The French army thought Spanish soldiers were hiding in the town. Because of this, they attacked and damaged Alcabón.
