What is Rydberg's Thistle Like?

Rydberg's thistle is a really big plant. It can grow super tall, sometimes reaching up to 300 cm (that's about 10 feet) high! Imagine a plant taller than most adults.

Its Stems and Leaves

This thistle usually has one main stem or very few branches. Its leaves are also very large, growing up to 90 cm (about 3 feet) long. The leaves are pinnately lobed, which means they are deeply cut into many smaller sections, kind of like a feather.

A cool fact about these leaves is that they have lots of sharp spines. These spines help protect the plant from animals that might want to eat it. Even with all those spines, the leaves usually don't have many hairs.

Its Flowers

The flowers of the alcove thistle grow in special heads. These flower heads are spiny on their sides, just like the leaves. Inside these spiny heads, you'll find many small flowers called disc florets.

These disc florets can be white, pink, or even purple. Unlike some other plants in the sunflower family, Rydberg's thistle does not have ray florets. Ray florets are the petal-like parts you see on the edge of a daisy or sunflower. This thistle only has the disc florets in the center.
