History of Aldeanueva de Ebro
How the Town Started
Aldeanueva de Ebro began in the 11th century. It was founded by shepherds from areas like Tierra de Cameros and Calahorra. This happened after the area was taken back by García Sánchez III of Navarre in 1045. This event was part of the "reconquista," which means the Christian kingdoms were taking back land from Muslim rule in Spain.
Becoming Independent
For a long time, Aldeanueva de Ebro was part of the town of Calahorra. But in 1664, during the reign of King Philip IV, Aldeanueva de Ebro became independent. To do this, the town paid a large sum of money. This money was lent by the friars from the monastery in Fitero, who had strong connections with the town.
Changing Hands
After gaining independence, the town, which was then sometimes called Arnedo de Ebro, went through several legal battles. Eventually, it came under the ownership of Manuel Íñiguez de Arnedo.
