Early Life and Becoming a Priest

Aldo Vannucchi was born in São João da Boa Vista, São Paulo, Brazil. His parents were Elvira Betiole and José Vannucchi. When he was just four years old, in 1932, his family moved to Sorocaba.

In 1952, Aldo Vannucchi became a priest. He was ordained by Don Aguirre, who was the first Bishop of Sorocaba. Don Aguirre also helped start the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters, which greatly inspired Aldo. Aldo learned that the true Church should be for everyone. He believed it needed to be built from the everyday lives of ordinary people.

A Time of Change in Brazil

During a time when the military ruled Brazil, Aldo Vannucchi was arrested for one night. This happened because of false accusations and his work with regular people. He was released after other religious leaders helped him.

Sadly, his nephew, Alexandre Vannucchi Leme, also faced difficulties during this time. Alexandre was a geology student at the University of São Paulo. He was held by the military and sadly passed away. He became a symbol for those who fought for the end of military rule.

Dedication to Education and Family

In 1963, Aldo Vannucchi decided to leave the priesthood. He then married Rosalia Cortez Vannucchi. They had two children together: João Estêvão Cortez Vannucchi and Ana Maria Cortez Vannucchi.

After leaving the clergy, he focused completely on teaching. He worked as a director and a professor of Philosophy in different schools and colleges in Sorocaba. In 1988, he became very involved in creating the University of Sorocaba (UNISO). The university was officially recognized in September 1994. Aldo Vannucchi served as its rector, or leader, until 2010.
