Aled Roberts (born 17 May 1962 – died 13 February 2022) was a Welsh politician. He was a member of the Welsh Liberal Democrats party. Aled Roberts came from a town called Rhosllanerchrugog in Wrexham, Wales.

He was a Member of the Welsh Assembly (AM) for the North Wales Region. He held this role from 2011 to 2016. Before that, he was a local councillor and led the Wrexham County Borough Council. Later, he became the Welsh Language Commissioner in 2019. He worked to promote the Welsh language until he passed away in 2022.

Aled Roberts' Early Life

Aled Roberts studied law at the Aberystwyth University. He earned his law degree in 1983. After finishing university, he worked as a solicitor, which is a type of lawyer.

In 1985, he helped with a campaign. This campaign worked to save a local building called a Miners' institute from closing. He stopped working as a lawyer when he became the leader of Wrexham County Borough Council.

Aled Roberts' Political Journey

Aled Roberts started his political career in 1991. He was first elected to the Wrexham County Borough Council. He represented the Rhos and Ponciau area.

Becoming Mayor and Council Leader

From 2003 to 2004, he served as the Mayor of Wrexham. This is an important local leadership role. In March 2005, he became the leader of the council. This happened after the previous leader stepped down.

Serving in the Welsh Assembly

In the 2011 National Assembly for Wales election, Aled Roberts was elected. He became an Assembly Member for North Wales. When he joined the Welsh Assembly, he decided to leave his role as council leader. He felt he could not do both jobs well.

A Brief Disqualification

Soon after he was elected, a small issue came up. It was found that Roberts was part of a group called the Valuation Tribunal for Wales. Assembly Members were not allowed to be part of this group. This was because it could seem like a conflict of interest.

Roberts was briefly disqualified from the Welsh Assembly. He explained that he had followed old guidance. The Welsh language rules he used had not been updated. Luckily, in July 2011, the Assembly voted to let him return.

Later Roles and Commissioner Work

Aled Roberts later became the spokesperson for education for the Welsh Liberal Democrats. In the 2016 National Assembly for Wales election, he ran for a different area. However, he was not re-elected to the Assembly.

In 2019, the Welsh Government chose him for a new job. He became the Welsh Language Commissioner. His job was to encourage people to use the Welsh language more. In 2022, he looked into a council that was only printing signs in English. He wanted to make sure Welsh was not left out.

Aled Roberts' Passing

Aled Roberts passed away on 13 February 2022. He was 59 years old. He was still working as the Welsh Language Commissioner at the time. He was married and had two sons.
