Alejandro Baltazar Maldonado Aguirre (born January 6, 1936) is a politician from Guatemala. He served as the acting president of Guatemala for a short time. This happened after the previous president, Otto Pérez Molina, stepped down on September 3, 2015.

Before becoming president, he was the Vice President of Guatemala. He was chosen for this role by the Congress on May 14, 2015. This was after the former vice president, Roxana Baldetti, resigned due to some problems. Mr. Maldonado has held many important jobs in his career. These include being a judge, a member of Congress, and an ambassador for his country. He also served as the Minister of Education and the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Growing Up in Guatemala City

Alejandro Maldonado Aguirre was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala, on January 6, 1936. He studied law at Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala. After finishing his studies, he began his long career in public service.

Starting in Politics

In the 1960s, Mr. Maldonado became involved in politics. He joined a political party called the National Liberation Movement. Later, in the 1980s, he helped create a new party called the National Renewal Party.

He ran for president in the 1982 election. He finished third in that race. He also ran for president again in 1985. Even though he didn't win, he continued to work in many important government roles.

Serving as a Judge

Mr. Maldonado also served as a judge on the Constitutional Court several times. This court makes sure that laws follow the country's constitution. In May 2015, after he became Vice President, some people protested. They were upset because he had been involved in a decision about a past court case.
