Alessandro "Sandro" Pertini (born 25 September 1896 – died 24 February 1990) was a very respected Italian journalist and politician. He was a member of the Socialist Party. Sandro Pertini became the seventh President of the Italian Republic, serving from 1978 to 1985.

Early Life and Bravery

Sandro Pertini was born in Stella, a town in Italy. He went to college at the University of Genoa. When he was 19, World War I began. Even though he didn't agree with the war, he joined the army. He became a lieutenant and was recognized for his courage. Pertini was married to Carla Voltolina.

Becoming President

In 1978, when he was 82 years old, Sandro Pertini was chosen to be the President of Italy. At that time, many people had lost trust in the government. President Pertini played a big part in helping Italians believe in their country's leaders and systems again. He was known for being honest and caring about ordinary people.

Meeting World Leaders

As President, Pertini traveled a lot and met many important leaders from around the world. He met people like Margaret Thatcher, who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He also met Mikhail Gorbachev from the Soviet Union and Ronald Reagan, the President of the United States.

Fighting for Justice

President Pertini was very brave in speaking out against things he thought were wrong.

  • He strongly condemned terrorism during a difficult period in Italy.
  • He was also against organized crime.
  • He spoke out against South African apartheid, which was a system of racial separation.
  • He opposed dictatorships, like the one led by Augusto Pinochet in Chile.
  • Pertini also disagreed with the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan.

In 1985, he finished his time as President. After that, he was given the special title of "senator for life." This meant he could be a senator for the rest of his life.

Later Years and Legacy

After his presidency, Pertini continued to be active. He became the President of the Foundation for Historical Studies of Florence. In 1988, he was the first person ever to receive the Otto Hahn Peace Award from the United Nations. This award recognized his efforts for peace. He lived in Rome, Italy.
