Alex Hickman's Life

Early Life and Education

Alex Hickman was born in a town called Grand Bank. At that time, it was part of the Dominion of Newfoundland, which is now Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. He went to Memorial University of Newfoundland to study. Later, he earned a law degree from Dalhousie University in 1947.

After finishing his studies, he became a lawyer. He was allowed to practice law in Nova Scotia in 1947. Then, in 1948, he could practice law in Newfoundland. In 1964, he received a special title called Queen's Counsel. This title is given to lawyers who are highly respected.

A Career in Politics

From 1966 to 1979, Alex Hickman was a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. This is like being a representative in the provincial government. He held many important jobs in the government's cabinet.

He was the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, which means he was in charge of legal matters. He also served as the Minister of Health, looking after healthcare for the province. Other roles included Minister Responsible for Intergovernmental Affairs, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Education.

Becoming a Judge

In 1979, Alex Hickman was appointed to the Supreme Court of Newfoundland. This is a very high court in the province. He became the Chief Justice of the Trial Division. This means he was the main judge in charge of trials.

As Chief Justice, he led two very important investigations called Royal Commissions. These commissions are special groups that look into big public events or issues. From 1982 to 1985, he led the commission that investigated the Ocean Ranger marine disaster. This was a serious accident at sea.

Later, from 1986 to 1989, he was the chairman of another Royal Commission. This one looked into the case of Donald Marshall Jr.. These commissions helped to find facts and make recommendations for the future.

Personal Life and Honors

In 2003, Alex Hickman was given a great honor. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. This award recognizes people who have made outstanding contributions to Canada. He passed away from cancer on January 10, 2016, when he was 90 years old.
