Alex Simpson's Football Journey
Starting Out in Football
Alex Simpson was born in Glasgow, Scotland. As a young player, he started with a team called Benburb. In January 1947, he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers.
He played only two games for the Wolves in the First Division. In October 1949, he moved to Notts County. This team was in the Third Division (South) at the time.
Alex played 76 games for Notts County between 1949 and 1952. He scored seven goals during his time there. He also helped Notts County win the Championship medal in 1950.
Playing for Southampton
In November 1952, Alex moved to Southampton. This team was in the Second Division. Another player, Jack Edwards, moved to Notts County as part of the deal.
People said Alex had a great attitude. He quickly became the team captain after joining Southampton.
On February 28, 1953, Alex broke his ankle while playing against Brentford. Southampton was struggling that season. Alex's replacement, Stan Clements, could not help the team avoid relegation. Southampton dropped to the Third Division (South) for the first time since 1922.
Alex recovered and was ready for the next season. But in October, he lost his spot to a new player, Robert McLaughlin. Alex got his place back for five games at the end of that season.
In the 1954-55 season, he played every game at first. He scored his only goal for Southampton on October 2, 1954. It was a header against Reading at The Dell. When he scored, he was knocked out, but he was fine for the next game. In March, Bryn Elliott took his place. In the summer of 1955, Alex was allowed to leave the club for free. He played 75 games for Southampton and scored one goal.
Later Football Years
In June 1955, Alex moved to Shrewsbury Town. This team was also in the Third Division South. He played very well for them. He played over 100 games in three years.
After that, he went back to the Wolverhampton area. He helped with his family's fish and chips business. He also played sometimes for Nuneaton Borough. Later in life, he moved to south Devon. Alex Simpson passed away on June 16, 2008.
