History of Benburb FC
How the Club Started
The exact reason for the club's name is not fully known. Some people think it comes from a village called Benburb in Northern Ireland. A big battle happened there in the 1640s. This might mean the club was started by people from Northern Ireland who moved to Glasgow.
The first team known as Benburb started around 1885. This was in the Govanhill area of Glasgow. In 1895, they tried to join with another team, Crown Athletic. This plan did not work out.
A new Benburb FC then played in the Oatlands area. Their ground was called Braehead Park. In June 1898, the city took over their park. The team then stopped playing. But a "new" Benburb FC started later that year. Many believe it was closely linked to the old club.
Finding a Permanent Home
The new Benburb FC eventually found a home in the Govan area. This was about 5 kilometers (3 miles) north-west of Oatlands. In 1900, they took over Govandale Park. This park used to belong to the Linthouse club.
Over time, factories needed more land in central Govan. So, Benburb had to move again. In 1911, they moved to a park on Broomloan Road. This park was owned by the Govan Police. In 1925, they moved to Craigton Park in Drumoyne. This new spot was near the railway tracks.
Even with all these moves, Benburb stayed in the Junior leagues. They have been part of these leagues in Glasgow since 1905.
New Tinto Park
From 1932 until 2014, Benburb played at Tinto Park. This park was built just for them. In its best days, it could hold 10,000 fans. But later, it became very old and run down.
The last game at the old Tinto Park was on March 29, 2014. Benburb won 2–1 against Johnstone Burgh. After this, the land was used to build houses.
For the 2014–15 season, Benburb shared a ground with Neilston Juniors. A new ground was being built right next to the old Tinto Park. This new ground is called New Tinto Park. It opened in summer 2015.
New Tinto Park has a modern 3G artificial turf pitch. It is now north of both the railway and the M8 motorway. This new stadium is the club's current home.
New Tinto Park has also been used by other teams. Rangers W.F.C. played there from 2015 to 2019. Rossvale has played there since 2019. Harmony Row Juniors also share the ground now.
