Alexa Citlali Moreno Medina (born on August 8, 1994) is a talented Mexican gymnast. She made history by becoming the first Mexican female gymnast to win a medal at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. This happened in 2018 when she earned a bronze medal on the vault.

Alexa has competed in three Olympic Games for Mexico. She was part of the team at the 2016, 2020, and 2024 Olympics. In 2020, she placed fourth in the vault final, showing how close she was to winning an Olympic medal! She is also the 2023 Pan American champion on vault. Throughout her career, she has won many medals in different competitions, including the Pan American Games and the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Alexa's Gymnastics Journey

Alexa Moreno started her gymnastics training when she was just three years old.

Early Senior Competitions (2010-2013)

In 2010, Alexa won a bronze medal on the vault at the Pacific Rim Championships. Later that year, at the Central American and Caribbean Games, she helped the Mexican team win a gold medal. She also earned a silver medal on the vault.

In 2011, Alexa qualified for the vault final at the World Championships, where she finished seventh. She also received a bronze medal with the Mexican team at the 2011 Pan American Games, even though she couldn't compete due to an injury.

Alexa continued to shine in 2012. She won a silver medal on the vault at the Zibo World Challenge Cup. Then, at the Ghent World Challenge Cup, she won her first gold medal in a FIG World Cup event, also on the vault. In 2013, she placed fifth in the vault final at the Summer Universiade.

First Olympic Experience (2014-2017)

In 2014, Alexa and the Mexican team won a bronze medal at the Pan American Championships. She also placed seventh on the vault at the World Championships. Later that year, she won a gold medal with the Mexican team at the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Alexa continued to win medals in 2015, including a silver medal on the vault at the Anadia World Challenge Cup. She competed at the World Championships and finished seventh in the vault final.

In 2016, Alexa qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She also won a silver medal on the vault at the Anadia World Challenge Cup. At the Olympics, she finished thirty-first in the all-around qualification. Alexa took a break from competing in 2017 to focus on her studies.

World Medal and Second Olympics (2018-2021)

Alexa returned to gymnastics in 2018. She won a bronze medal with the team at the Pan American Championships. The biggest moment of her career came at the World Championships in Doha. She won a bronze medal on the vault, making her the first Mexican female gymnast to win a World Championships medal!

In 2019, Alexa continued to perform well. She won bronze medals on the vault at the Baku World Cup and the Korea Cup. Her strong performances helped her qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

At the 2020 Summer Olympics, Alexa made history again by becoming only the second Mexican female gymnast to reach an Olympic final. She finished an impressive fourth place in the vault final, just missing a medal by a tiny margin. After the Olympics, she announced her retirement from the sport.

Amazing Comeback (2023)

In March 2023, Alexa surprised everyone by announcing she was returning to gymnastics! She competed at the Pan American Championships in Medellín, Colombia. There, she won a gold medal on the vault and helped the Mexican team win a silver medal.

Alexa was chosen as the female flag bearer for Mexico at the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador. She had an incredible performance, winning gold medals with the team, on vault, and on floor exercise. She also earned a silver medal in the all-around and a bronze medal on the balance beam.

Later in 2023, Alexa won a gold medal on vault at the Paris World Challenge Cup and a bronze medal on floor exercise. At the World Championships, she secured an individual spot for the 2024 Olympic Games. She finished fourth in the vault final at the World Championships.

Road to Third Olympics (2024)

In 2024, Alexa competed in more World Challenge Cup events. She earned a bronze medal on vault at the Varna World Challenge Cup and a gold medal on vault at the Koper World Challenge Cup.

At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Alexa was the first reserve for the vault final, meaning she was ready to compete if another gymnast couldn't.

Awards and Recognition

In November 2019, Alexa Moreno received the Premio Nacional de Deportes 2019 (National Sports Prize 2019) in the "non-professional" category. This is a very important award in Mexico. Also in 2019, she was recognized as one of the 100 most powerful women in Mexico by Forbes Mexico magazine.

Personal Life

During the 2016 Olympics, Alexa faced some unkind comments on social media. However, she continued to focus on her sport and studies. In December 2021, she graduated with a degree in Architecture from the University of the Valley of Mexico. Alexa is a big fan of K-pop music and anime. Her floor music at the 2020 Olympics was from the anime 'Demon Slayer'.

Eponymous Skill

Alexa Moreno has a gymnastics move named after her in the official Code of Points. This means she was the first to perform this specific skill in a major competition.
