Occupation | Author, Zionist activist |
Alexander Aaronsohn (Hebrew: אלכסנדר אהרנסון) was an important author and activist. He was born in Zikhron Ya'akov on September 28, 1888, and passed away in Nice, France, on May 28, 1948. Alexander wrote a book called With the Turks in Palestine. This book described the difficult lives of people in the region known as Palestine.
Alexander was part of the well-known Aaronsohn family. They were very important in the Zionist movement, which worked to create a Jewish homeland. His brother was Aaron Aaronsohn, and his sister was Sarah Aaronsohn. Together, these three helped start a secret Jewish spy group called NILI.
Alexander's Early Life and Family
Alexander Aaronsohn's parents moved from Romania to Palestine. They joined other Jewish families to create a new village called Zikhron Ya'akov. This village was in a rich farming area near Mount Carmel. Alexander was born and grew up in this small, growing farming community.
In 1910, Alexander traveled to America. His brother, who led a Jewish research station, advised him to go. Soon after arriving, Alexander became a citizen and found work with the Department of Agriculture.
Alexander returned to Palestine in July 1913. He wanted to share ideas about Zionism in the United States. He also wanted to help protect his village.
Serving in the Turkish Army
When the First World War began, the Ottoman Empire controlled Palestine. Even though Alexander had ties to the United States, he had to join the Turkish Army. Alexander and twenty friends reported to the recruiting station in Acre.
They were then marched to Han and waited with many poor Arabs. Alexander was told to go to Safed, where his army group was located.
The four-day march to Safed was very hard. It was hot in September, and they had to find their own food. Some of the poor Arabs caused trouble by stealing from villages they passed. When they reached Safed, they learned their barracks would be a dirty, empty mosque.
Later Years and Passing
Alexander Aaronsohn died in 1948 in Nice, France. He passed away from a heart attack.
