Alexander William Anstruther (born 3 October 1846, died 18 October 1902) was a Scottish cricketer. He was born in Rajahmundry, which was part of British India at the time. He played a type of cricket called first-class cricket. Anstruther was a right-handed batsman. He played for two important teams: the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and Sussex. He passed away in Wormit, Scotland.

Alexander Anstruther's Cricket Journey

Alexander Anstruther started his cricket career in 1873. His first game was for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). This type of game, called first-class cricket, is the highest level of domestic cricket. It's like playing in a major league!

Playing for the MCC

After his first game in 1873, Anstruther didn't play another first-class match for almost a year. But then, he became a regular player for the MCC. He played a total of six games for this famous club. The MCC is one of the oldest and most respected cricket clubs in the world.

Captaining Sussex

Later in his career, Anstruther moved to play for the Sussex team. His first game for Sussex was in 1878. In this debut match, he was even the captain of the team! He scored his highest runs for Sussex in that game. However, his team unfortunately lost the match. He played four more games for Sussex that same season. Even with Anstruther as captain, the Sussex team didn't win any of those matches.

Later Career and Family

After his time with Sussex, Alexander Anstruther played only two more first-class matches. Both of these games were for the MCC. The first was in 1880, and his very last game was seven years later, in 1887. Cricket was a family affair for the Anstruthers. Alexander's nephew, Robert Anstruther, also played a first-class cricket match in the 1910–11 season.
