Sir Alexander Dempsey (born 1852 in Ballymoney, County Antrim – died 1920) was an Irish doctor, who also managed hospitals and served as a judge in local courts. He was a very important person in the medical world of his time.

Early Life and Education

Alexander Dempsey was born in 1852 in a place called Ballymoney, which is in County Antrim, Ireland. He went to school at St Malachy's College. After that, he studied medicine at the Catholic University Medical School, Dublin. He also attended Queen's College, Galway.

In 1874, he finished his studies. He earned a special degree called Doctor of Medicine from the Royal University of Ireland. He also received a diploma from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. This meant he was fully qualified to be a doctor.

A Busy Medical Career

Right after finishing his education in 1874, Sir Alexander Dempsey opened his own doctor's office. It was located on Donegall Street in Belfast. He worked hard helping people in the community.

He was also very active in medical groups. He helped start the North of Ireland Branch of the British Medical Association. He served as its secretary and later became its president. From 1880 to 1891, he was also the president of the Ulster Medical Association. These roles showed how much other doctors respected him.

Serving as a Magistrate

Besides being a doctor, Sir Alexander Dempsey also helped with the law. In 1880, he was chosen to be a Justice of the Peace for the City of Belfast. A Justice of the Peace is like a local judge. They help with smaller legal matters and make sure the law is followed in their community.

Awards and Recognition

Sir Alexander Dempsey received many honors for his work. In 1911, he was given a special title: he was knighted. This meant he became "Sir Alexander Dempsey," a very high honor from the King or Queen.

He was also a member of important medical groups. He was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine in London. He was also a fellow of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland. Being a "fellow" means you are a respected member of a professional group.
