Alexander Erskine, 3rd Earl of Kellie (around 1615–1677) was a Scottish soldier and a noble. He played an important role during a time of great change in Scotland.
A Loyal Soldier
Alexander Erskine became the Earl of Kellie in 1643. This happened after his brother Thomas passed away.
He was a very loyal supporter of the King. These supporters were known as Royalists. Alexander fought as a leader of soldiers for Fife and Kinross. In 1648, he even tried to help rescue the King.
Later, he went to the Netherlands to fight for King Charles II. But in 1651, he was captured at the Battle of Worcester. After this, he spent many years in prison. His lands and property were taken away by the new government, called the Commonwealth. This was part of the rules set by the new leaders.
Life After the King's Return
In 1660, the King returned to power. This event was called the Restoration. After this, Alexander Erskine received new important jobs.
He became the governor of the fort and town of Ayr. He also became a high-ranking officer in the guards. In 1661, he joined the Privy Council. This was a special group of advisors to the King.

Alexander Erskine was the son of Alexander Erskine (who died in 1633) and Anne Seton.
He married two times. His first marriage was in 1661 in Holland to Anna Kilpatrick. She was the daughter of a military general. With Anna, he had one daughter named Ann.
In 1665, he married Mary Dalzeil. She was the daughter of Sir John Dalzeil. With Mary, he had two daughters, Elizabeth and Mary. They also had a son named Alexander. This son later became the 4th Earl of Kellie after his father.
