Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Alexander Lindsay, 2nd Lord Spynie (died March 1646) was a Scottish nobleman and a soldier. He was known for his military service in Europe and his support for King Charles I.

Early Life and Family Matters

Alexander Lindsay was the oldest son of Alexander Lindsay, 1st Lord Spynie and Jean Lyon. His father died in 1607 when Alexander was still young.

A legal process about his father's death was put on hold for a while. When Alexander grew up, he agreed to settle the matter. The person involved, Lindsay of Edzell, swore that his father's death was an accident. Edzell then paid money and gave land to Alexander and his sister. This agreement was made official in 1617.

Military Career and Service Abroad

In 1625, Alexander Lindsay attended the funeral of King James VI and I in Westminster Abbey.

A year later, in 1626, he was given an important role. He was made the commander-in-chief of the army in Scotland for his entire life.

Lord Spynie then raised a group of three thousand soldiers to help King Christian IV of Denmark-Norway. He served with skill in both Denmark and Germany. King Christian made him the Governor General of the eastern Danish areas of Skåne, Halland, and Blekinge.

In 1628, his soldiers fought bravely at the Siege of Stralsund. They fought alongside the soldiers of Lord Reay. The Scottish soldiers and their allies were eventually helped by Sir Alexander Leslie. Sir Alexander Leslie then became the governor of the city. Lord Spynie and his soldiers were called back to Skåne.

Return to Scotland and Later Years

After his time in Europe, Lord Spynie returned to Scotland. His important role as commander-in-chief was confirmed again in 1633.

During a time of conflict with the Covenanters, Lord Spynie supported King Charles I of Great Britain. He joined Montrose at Perth in September 1644. This was after the battle of Tippermuir.

Lord Spynie entered Aberdeen with Montrose. However, when Montrose left the city two days later, Lord Spynie was captured. He was then sent south to Edinburgh.

Alexander Lindsay, 2nd Lord Spynie, passed away in March 1646.

Family Life

Lord Spynie married twice. His first wife was Joanna Douglas, but they did not have any children.
