Alexander Richard Ludwig (born May 7, 1992) is a Canadian actor and country musician. He started acting when he was a child. He became well-known as a teenager for his roles in the movies The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising (2007) and Race to Witch Mountain (2009).
He is also famous for playing Cato in The Hunger Games (2012). Later, he had important roles as Shane Patton in Lone Survivor (2013) and Dorn in Bad Boys for Life (2020) and Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024). Alexander Ludwig played the legendary Viking Björn Ironside in the TV series Vikings from 2014 to 2020. He also had a main role in the TV show Heels from 2021 to 2023. As a musician, Ludwig released his first album, Highway 99, in 2022.

Early Life and Education
Alexander Ludwig was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. His mother, Sharlene Martin, was an actress. His father, Harald Horst Ludwig, is a businessman. Alexander has three younger brothers and sisters. He loved performing from a young age. He once said, "I have a big imagination. I love performing."
Even though his mother was an actress, Alexander had to convince his parents to let him act as a child. They worried that child actors might lose touch with reality. Ludwig later studied theater at the University of Southern California.
Acting Career Highlights
Ludwig started acting at age nine. His first job was in a Harry Potter toy commercial. This helped him get an agent and more acting jobs. He appeared in movies like Air Bud: World Pup (2000) and MXP: Most Extreme Primate (2003). He also acted in Scary Godmother: The Revenge of Jimmy (2005) and Eve and the Fire Horse (2005).
He also worked in television. He was in TV movies like A Little Thing Called Murder (2006). He also appeared in TV series such as The Dead Zone. Ludwig got his first main role in The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising (2007). He had to audition 16 times before getting the part.
His next big role was Seth in Race to Witch Mountain (2009). In this movie, he played one half of a teenage alien brother-sister duo. He starred alongside Dwayne Johnson. The movie was very popular and earned a lot of money when it first came out. Ludwig found it challenging to balance school and filming The Seeker. He said it was an amazing but hard experience.
In 2012, Ludwig played Cato in The Hunger Games. Cato was a strong and dangerous character from District 2. He was a main threat to the heroes in the story. For this role, Ludwig won the Best Fight award at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards. He shared the award with Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson. He also won Best Villain at the 2012 Teen Choice Awards.
In 2013, he acted in Lone Survivor and Grown Ups 2. From 2014 to 2020, he was a main actor in the TV series Vikings. He played Björn Ironside, a famous Viking warrior. In 2015, he had lead roles in two horror films, Final Girl and The Final Girls. In 2020, he played Dorn in Bad Boys for Life. He also appeared in a music video for The Band Perry's song "Gentle on My Mind".
Music Career
In May 2021, Alexander Ludwig signed with a country music record label called BBR Music Group. He released his first music collection, an EP (Extended Play), on May 21, 2021. On August 26, 2022, Ludwig released his first full album, Highway 99. He also appeared in Nicki Minaj's music video for her song "Super Freaky Girl" in 2022.
Personal Life
Alexander Ludwig used to be a competitive freestyle skier. He also enjoys skydiving. He is married to Lauren Dear. They got married in 2020. They have two children: a daughter born in April 2023 and a son born in July 2024.
