Playing Career
Early Years
In the 2010–11 season, Alexander Wennberg joined the Djurgårdens IF team for players under 18. He scored 11 goals and made 23 assists that year. The next year, he moved up to the team's under-20 group. He also played for Sweden in international tournaments for young players.
Wennberg was seen as one of the top young European players for the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. The Columbus Blue Jackets chose him as the 14th player picked overall. In May 2014, he signed his first professional contract with the Blue Jackets.
Playing in the NHL
Columbus Blue Jackets

Alexander Wennberg played his first NHL game on 9 October 2014, against the Buffalo Sabres. In that game, he also earned his first point in the NHL. After playing seven NHL games, he was sent to the Springfield Falcons, a team in a lower league. However, he was called back to the Blue Jackets the very next day. Wennberg scored his first NHL goal on 22 December 2014.
He missed the first five games of the 2015–16 season because of a concussion. This injury happened during the Blue Jackets' first game of that season. He was injured again in early November and had to take time off to recover.
The next season, 2016–17, was a great one for Wennberg. He played in 80 games and had his best year for goals (13) and assists (46). On 1 September 2017, he signed a big new contract with the Blue Jackets. It was for six years and worth $29.4 million.
During the first game of the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs, Wennberg was hurt by a hit from a player on the Washington Capitals. Because of this, the Blue Jackets got a power play, which means they had more players on the ice. Columbus scored during this power play to tie the game. The Blue Jackets then won the game in overtime. Wennberg played two more games in that series, but his team did not win the series.
Florida Panthers
On 8 October 2020, Wennberg left the Blue Jackets. The next day, he signed a one-year contract with the Florida Panthers. This was a new start for him. The 2020–21 season was shorter than usual because of the pandemic. Wennberg had a great season with the Panthers, scoring a career-high 17 goals in 56 games. He also had 12 assists and played a strong two-way game, helping both offense and defense.
Seattle Kraken
After playing for the Panthers, Wennberg became a free agent. On 28 July 2021, he signed a three-year contract with the Seattle Kraken. The Kraken was a brand new team in the NHL. During training camp, Wennberg played on a line with two other Swedish players. Because they were all from Sweden, their line was called the "Swedish House Mafia."
New York Rangers
On 6 March 2024, the Kraken traded Wennberg to the New York Rangers. In return, the Kraken received some draft picks for future players.
San Jose Sharks
In the summer of 2024, Wennberg left the Rangers as a free agent. He then signed a two-year contract with the San Jose Sharks.
Personal Life
Alexander Wennberg and his partner, Felicia Weeren, became parents in September 2021. They had a son named Rio. Alexander and Felicia grew up near each other in Sweden. They support groups that help LGBTQIA+ youth.
In July 2023, Wennberg became very popular on TikTok among a group called "BookTok." The Kraken team even started making their own TikTok videos about him. Wennberg and his partner later spoke out about the attention, asking for "a little respect" and saying that some of the comments were too much. The Kraken then removed the videos that were related to BookTok.
