Club Career Highlights
Starting His Football Journey
Alexandros Tzorvas began his football career at the famous Panathinaikos football academy. Even though he was very talented, it was hard for him to join the main team. This was because there were already many experienced goalkeepers like Antonis Nikopolidis and Konstantinos Chalkias.
To help him get more experience, Panathinaikos loaned him out. He played for teams like Agios Nikolaos, Markopoulo, and Thrasyvoulos. In 2005, Panathinaikos called him back to their team.
Playing for OFI Crete
Tzorvas didn't get many chances to play for the first team at Panathinaikos. So, he moved to OFI in 2007. He quickly became the starting goalkeeper for the team from Crete. His great performances made him very popular. In 2008, he was even named the Second Greek Best Goalkeeper. This was a big honor, especially since he was behind the legendary Antonis Nikopolidis.
Returning to Panathinaikos
In the 2008–09 season, Panathinaikos brought Tzorvas back from OFI. Even though another goalkeeper, Mario Galinović, was expected to be the main choice, Tzorvas got his chance. By October, he was playing in important games for the Greek Superleague and the UEFA Champions League.
For the 2009–10 season, he became the main goalkeeper. This was partly because his teammate Galinović was not playing as well. Tzorvas is a very big fan of Panathinaikos. Once, during a game against their rivals Olympiakos, he showed his love for his team by kissing the shamrock badge on his shirt in front of the opposing fans.
Adventures in Italy
On August 26, 2011, Alexandros Tzorvas moved to Italy. He joined Serie A club Palermo. He played his first game for Palermo on September 11, 2011, in a match they won 4–3 against Inter.
He was first hired as the main goalkeeper. However, after some games, he lost his starting spot. He then became the second-choice goalkeeper. Later, Palermo signed another promising goalkeeper, which meant Tzorvas played even less.
He then moved to Genoa in 2012. He made his debut for Genoa on March 17, 2013, against Fiorentina. After his time in Italy, Tzorvas decided to return to Greece.
Back to Greece with Apollon Smyrnis
On July 9, 2013, Tzorvas returned to Greece. He joined Apollon Smyrnis, a team that had just been promoted to the top Greek league. He made his debut for them on August 18, 2013, in a 2–1 home win.
It was a big decision for Tzorvas to leave Italy's top league. But he really wanted to play for the Greek national team again. Joining Apollon Smyrnis helped him achieve this goal.
Playing in India
On September 1, 2014, Alexandros Tzorvas signed with NorthEast United FC. This team plays in the Indian Super League. He started his first match against Kerala Blasters FC and was named "man of the match" for keeping a clean sheet (meaning the other team didn't score). He left the club on December 23, 2014.
International Career
Alexandros Tzorvas also played for the Greek national team. On March 21, 2008, he was called up as the third-choice goalkeeper for a friendly match against Portugal. After the main goalkeeper, Antonis Nikopolidis, retired from the national team, Tzorvas became the second-choice goalkeeper. He was part of the squad for UEFA Euro 2008.
He played his first senior international game for Greece on November 19, 2008. This was a friendly match against Italy, who were the 2006 FIFA World Cup champions.
One of his biggest achievements was during Greece's 2009 World Cup playoff games against Ukraine. Tzorvas played incredibly well, stopping all of Ukraine's attacks for both games. This helped Greece win 1–0 overall and qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
At the 2010 FIFA World Cup, he was the starting goalkeeper for all three group matches. However, at UEFA Euro 2012, another goalkeeper, Kostas Chalkias, took his spot.
