He helped them win a national title in his first season. After a loan spell at Sparta Prague, Chipciu returned to Romania in 2020 to play for CFR Cluj.

Club career
Early years
Alexandru Chipciu began his football journey at the age of 13. He joined his hometown club, Dacia Unirea Brăila, in 2001. From 2004 to 2006, he continued to play youth football for Sporting Pitești.
Playing for FC Brașov
When he was 18, Chipciu started playing for the senior team at FC Brașov. He scored four goals in his first year. However, he didn't play as much when the team tried to get promoted to the top league, Liga I.
To get more experience, he was loaned out twice. First, he played for Liga II team Forex Brașov in 2008. Then, he went back to his old youth club, Brăila, which was in Liga III.
When he returned to FC Brașov, they had been promoted to Liga I. Chipciu still didn't get to play regularly at first. But in the 2010–11 season, he played very well. He became one of the best players on the team. This caught the attention of big clubs from Bucharest, like Steaua and Dinamo. He decided to stay at Brașov and signed a new contract. He started the 2011–12 season strongly, scoring two important goals early on.
Time at Steaua București

On 21 December 2011, Steaua București announced they had signed Chipciu. He signed a five-year contract. Reports said the transfer fee was about €1.2 million.
Chipciu scored his first goal for Steaua on 31 March 2012. It was in a 1–1 draw against Pandurii Târgu Jiu. A week later, he scored again against Sportul Studențesc. On 7 May, he received a red card in a match.
In late 2012, Chipciu helped Steaua get through the group stage of the UEFA Europa League. They played against teams like VfB Stuttgart, Molde, and Copenhagen. The next year, Steaua beat Ajax in a penalty shootout. They then lost to Chelsea in the next round.
On 10 May 2013, Chipciu got injured in a big match against Dinamo București. He was out for five months. Two weeks later, he received a winner's medal. Steaua had won the Liga I title. This was his first major trophy. He won six more trophies with Steaua over the next three years. These included two more league titles, one Romanian Cup, one Romanian Supercup, and two League Cups.
Moving to Anderlecht
On 18 July 2016, Chipciu went to Belgium for a medical check-up at Anderlecht. The next day, the club officially announced he had signed a four-year contract. Anderlecht paid €3 million for him.
On 7 August 2016, Chipciu scored his first goal for Anderlecht. It was in a 5–1 win against Kortrijk in the Belgian Pro League. Later, he didn't play as much. So, on 3 July 2018, he was loaned to Sparta Prague. During his year there, he played 27 games and scored one goal.
Playing for CFR Cluj
Chipciu came back to Romania on 18 January 2020. He signed with CFR Cluj as a free agent. He played nine games that season. CFR Cluj won their third national title in a row.
Joining Universitatea Cluj
On 25 June 2022, Chipciu joined Universitatea Cluj. This club is a city rival of CFR Cluj. He signed a one-year deal with them.
International career
On 29 March 2006, Chipciu played his first game for the Romania under-17 team. He also played for the under-19 team.
Chipciu earned his first cap (played his first game) for the senior national team in 2011. He started a match against San Marino. On 15 November that year, he scored his first goal for the senior team. It was in a friendly match against Greece in Austria.
On 17 May 2016, Chipciu was chosen by coach Anghel Iordănescu for the team that would play in the UEFA Euro 2016. He made it to the final squad for the tournament.
