His Role in the Spanish Civil War
When the Spanish Civil War began on July 18, 1936, Alfonso Beorlegui was in a city called Pamplona. He quickly joined forces with General Emilio Mola. General Mola gave him an important job. Beorlegui was put in charge of the local police forces, including the Civil Guard and the Assault Guards. This was about 2,000 men. He was also responsible for keeping order in the city.
Soon after, General Mola gave Beorlegui another big task. He was to lead an attack into the Basque area, specifically the province of Gipuzkoa. His forces included regular soldiers, Civil Guard members, and some new groups of volunteers called requetés.
The Campaign of Gipuzkoa
Beorlegui's forces moved into Gipuzkoa. Their main goal was to take control of the area. This was an important part of the war.
The Battle of Irún
One of the most important battles was the Battle of Irún. Beorlegui's troops fought hard and took control of the town of Irún on September 5, 1936. This was a very important victory. By taking Irún, they were able to close the border between France and Spain. This stopped supplies and help from reaching the other side of the conflict in the northern parts of Spain.
His Final Days
During the advance towards the international bridge in Irún, Colonel Beorlegui was hurt. He was wounded in battle. Sadly, he refused to get the proper medical care he needed. He continued to lead his troops despite his injury. About a month later, on September 29, 1936, he passed away from his wounds.
After Beorlegui's death, General Mola's forces continued their mission. They soon secured the entire province of Gipuzkoa. This action cut off the remaining areas controlled by the opposing side in the north. This isolation eventually led to those areas falling the next year.
