Alfonso's Early Life and Challenges

Alfonso Cabello Llamas was born in La Rambla, Spain. He was born without his left hand. His mother made sure that this would not stop him from doing anything. She taught him to tie his shoelaces using only one hand.

As a child, Alfonso enjoyed playing other sports. He played basketball and also swam. Swimming helped him improve his balance. It taught him how to use his body effectively with his right hand and his arm stump. Sometimes, his physical education teachers would say he did not need to meet the same standards as other students.

Recognition and Support

In 2008, Alfonso was recognized at a special event. This event was held by the Andalusian Federation of Sports for the Physically Handicapped. In 2009, he received a scholarship from the Andalucía Olympic Foundation. This scholarship helped him and 13 other athletes from Cordoba.

In 2013, Alfonso attended an event for a Spanish insurance company. This company, Santa Lucía Seguros, became a sponsor of the Spanish Paralympic Committee. This sponsorship helps fund Spanish athletes with disabilities. Alfonso wanted to show his support for this kind of help. Also in 2013, he received a special award called the gold Real Orden al Mérito Deportivo.

Alfonso's Amazing Cycling Career

When Alfonso first learned to ride a bicycle, he used his arm stump to help control the brakes. His first bike race was an exhibition event. After that, he quickly started competing in more serious races.

Early Competitions

In May 2008, Alfonso competed in France. He took part in the Third International Criterium Cycling Disability event. Later that year, he raced in the European Cup Adapted Cycling. He finished sixteenth in a 56.4-kilometer race.

In 2011, Alfonso competed in the Spanish national disability cycling track championship. He won first place in this event. He also participated in the 2011 World Championships.

Paralympic and World Championship Success

At the 2012 Paralympic Cycling World Championships in Los Angeles, Alfonso won a bronze medal. This was in the C5 km race. He set a personal best time of 1:07.876. He also took part in the team sprint event.

Alfonso won his first gold medal at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, United Kingdom. This was in the Men's 1 km time trial C4-5. He broke the C5 world record held by Jon-Allan Butterworth. This gold medal was the first one won by Spain at the 2012 Games.

He won another gold medal in the same event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo. He set a new world record time of 1:01.557. This was the first time that Jody Cundy's time was beaten in this event at the Paralympics. Alfonso also won a silver medal at the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris in the Mixed team sprint C1–5. He also earned a bronze medal in the Time trial C4–5 at the 2024 Paris Games.
