Alfonso II (born 1180 – died February 2, 1209) was an important ruler in the Middle Ages. He was the Count of Provence from 1185 until his death. Provence was a region in what is now southeastern France.
Alfonso II was the second son of Alfonso II of Aragon, who was also known as Alfonso I of Provence. His mother was Sancha of Castile. He was born in the city of Barcelona.
Becoming Count of Provence
Alfonso's father gave him the title of Count of Provence in 1185. Before that, his uncle, Sancho, held the title. This made Alfonso II a powerful figure in the region at a young age.
His Marriage and Family
In 1193, Alfonso II married Garsenda II of Sabran. She was the granddaughter of William IV of Forcalquier, who was a count himself.
Garsenda was set to inherit her grandfather's county of Forcalquier. When she was just thirteen, a special agreement was made. This agreement, called the Treaty of Aix, said that Garsenda would inherit Forcalquier and marry Alfonso. Their wedding took place in July 1193 in Aix-en-Provence.
Alfonso and Garsenda had a son named Ramon Berenguer IV. He later became the Count of Provence after his father. They also had a daughter named Garsenda. She married Guillermo II de Montcada and had children, including Gaston VII, Viscount of Béarn.
His Final Journey
Alfonso II passed away on February 2, 1209, in Palermo, a city in Sicily. He was traveling with his sister, Constance. She was on her way to marry Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor, a very important ruler.
