Life as a Queen

Sancha was a queen who loved art and music. She supported poets and musicians called troubadours. These artists would sing and tell stories.

Queen Sancha also had some disagreements about her lands. These lands were part of her "dower," which means property given to a wife. In 1177, she went to a place called Ribagorza. There, she took control of some castles and forts. These places had belonged to the king.

Later Years and Legacy

Sancha's husband, King Alfonso, passed away in 1196. After his death, her son, Peter II of Aragon, became the new king. He took over the political duties. Sancha decided to step back from court life.

She moved to a special place called the Monastery of Santa María de Sigena. This was a convent for noble women. Sancha herself had helped to start this monastery. There, she joined a group called the Order of St John of Jerusalem. She wore their special cross for the rest of her life.

Sancha's daughter, Constance, also visited her at the monastery. Constance was a widow at the time. She stayed with her mother before leaving Aragon. Constance then went to marry Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor in 1208.

Sancha passed away soon after, in November 1208. She was about 54 years old. She was buried in front of the main altar at her monastery in Monastery of Santa María de Sigena. Her tomb can still be seen there today.
