Sancha of Aragon was a royal princess born in the late 1100s. Her family was very important in the history of Spain. She was part of the House of Barcelona, a royal family that ruled the Crown of Aragon.
Her Family and Royal Connections
Sancha had many famous relatives. Her grandparents on her father's side were Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona and Petronilla of Aragon. Her mother's parents were Alfonso VII of León and Castile and Richeza of Poland, Queen of Castile. This means she was connected to many royal families across Europe.
Sancha also had siblings who became important rulers. Her brother, Peter II of Aragon, became the King of Aragon. Another brother, Alfonso II, Count of Provence, became a count in a region called Provence.
Her Marriage and Titles
In 1211, Sancha of Aragon married Raymond VII, Count of Toulouse. He was a very powerful noble in a region of France called Toulouse. When Raymond's father, Raymond VI, passed away in 1222, Sancha gained new important titles.
- Countess consort of Toulouse: This title meant she was the wife of the Count of Toulouse.
- Marquise consort of Provence: This title meant she was the wife of the Marquis of Provence.
These titles showed her high rank and influence in her husband's lands. Sancha held these titles until she and Raymond divorced in 1241.
Her Child
Sancha and Raymond had one child together, a daughter named Joan, Countess of Toulouse. Joan later inherited the same important titles from her father, becoming the Countess of Toulouse, and ruled from 1249 to 1271.
