Alfonso Quijada Urías was born in Quezaltepeque, a town in the La Libertad Department of El Salvador.
Early Awards and Recognition
Alfonso Quijada Urías started winning awards for his writing early in his career.
- In 1962, he earned second prize in a cultural competition at the University of El Salvador.
- The next year, in 1963, he won third prize at the Juegos Florales de Zacatecoluca.
- In 1967, he received first prize for his poetry at the Juegos Florales in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala.
- He continued to win, taking first prize at the Bienal de Poesía Latinoamericana in Panama in 1971.
Life in Other Countries
In 1981, Alfonso Quijada Urías moved to Nicaragua. Later, he moved to Mexico, where he worked as a journalist, writing for newspapers and magazines. In 2003, he received the "Premio de Poesía Instituto Cervantes" award for his poetry. Today, he lives in Canada.
