Alfonso de Castilla y Molina (born 1286 in Valladolid – died 1291 in Valladolid) was a Spanish prince, known as an Infante. He was the son of King Sancho IV of Castile and Queen María de Molina. Alfonso lived during the time of the Kingdom of Castile.
Who Was Alfonso's Family?
Alfonso was the son of King Sancho IV of Castile and Queen María de Molina. His grandparents on his father's side were King Alfonso X of Castile and Queen Violant of Hungary. Violant was the daughter of King James I of Aragon.
On his mother's side, his grandparents were Infante Alfonso de Molina and Mayor Alfonso de Meneses. Alfonso had several brothers and sisters. These included Ferdinand IV of Castile, who later became king, and Isabella of Castile, Queen of Aragon.
Alfonso's Short Life
Alfonso was born in Valladolid in 1286. He was a young prince of the Kingdom of Castile.
In 1291, when Alfonso was five years old, his father King Sancho IV wanted to make a special agreement. He planned for Alfonso to marry Juana Núñez de Lara. She was the daughter of a powerful noble, Juan Núñez I de Lara. This marriage was meant to create a strong political alliance.
However, Alfonso sadly died later that same year in Valladolid. His death meant that the planned marriage and the alliance could not happen.
Where Is Alfonso Buried?
After Alfonso passed away, his body was laid to rest. He was buried in the San Pablo Church in Valladolid. This church belonged to the Dominican Order.
Today, you can see his original coffin at the Museo de Valladolid. The museum is located in the Palacio de Fabio Nelli. The museum even displays some of the clothes Alfonso was buried in.
