Alfred George Drake was a very brave English soldier. He received the Victoria Cross, which is the highest award for courage in the British military. This special medal is given for incredible bravery when facing the enemy.
Alfred was born in December 1893 in Mile End, Stepney, London. His parents were Robert and Mary Ann Drake.
A Hero in World War I
Alfred George Drake was 21 years old when he became a corporal in the 8th Battalion of The Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own). This was part of the British Army. He served during the First World War, a huge global conflict.
Earning the Victoria Cross
On 23 November 1915, near La Brique in Belgium, Corporal Drake showed amazing bravery. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on that day. Sadly, he was killed during this very brave act.
