Occupation zoologist

Alfred Henry Garrod (born May 18, 1846 – died October 17, 1879) was an English zoologist. He studied animals, especially those with backbones, like birds and mammals. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society, which is a very important group for scientists.

Alfred was born in London. His father, Sir Alfred Baring Garrod, was a famous doctor. His brother, Archibald Edward Garrod, also became a well-known doctor. Both his father and brother made important discoveries in medicine.

Studying and Teaching Science

Alfred Garrod went to several schools, including University College School and King's College London. Later, he studied at Caius College, Cambridge and then St John's College. He was very good at science, earning top grades in his natural sciences degree. In 1873, he became a college fellow, which is a special academic position.

From 1874 to 1879, Garrod taught about the bodies of different animals at King's College London. This subject is called comparative anatomy. In 1875, he became a professor at the Royal Institution. He taught about how living things work (physiology) and how their bodies are built. He held this important job until 1878. In 1876, he was made a fellow of the Royal Society because of his scientific work.

Garrod's Scientific Work

Alfred Garrod was most interested in the bodies of birds and ruminants. Ruminants are animals like cows and deer that chew their cud. He studied how their bodies were put together.

He also helped describe the animal samples collected during the Challenger expedition. This was a very famous trip around the world from 1872 to 1876. Scientists on the expedition collected many new plants and animals.

In 1881, another scientist named William Alexander Forbes honored Alfred Garrod. He named a type of bird, the Garrodia (which is a kind of grey-backed storm petrel), after him.
