The Alfred Hocking House, also called Graystones, is a beautiful historic home in Honolulu, Hawaii. It was built in 1903 for Alfred Hocking, who founded the Honolulu Brewing and Malting Company. The house was designed in the Queen Anne style architecture by famous architects E.A.P. Newcomb and C.W. Dickey. Because of its special design and history, it was added to the Hawaii and National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

What Makes the Alfred Hocking House Special?

The Alfred Hocking House is known for its unique look. Its nickname, Graystones, comes from its outer walls. These walls are made of thick, hand-cut bluestone slabs. White latticework and green and white awnings add to its charm. These features are found over the large porch that wraps around the house.

Inside the Historic Home

Inside, the house is very spacious. It has about 8,210 square feet (763 m2) of living area. This includes seven bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms. The house features a grand staircase and very high ceilings. You can also see beautiful chandeliers and shiny hardwood floors. The walls have redwood wainscoting, which is a type of wood paneling. There are also special Palladian windows and old-fashioned claw-foot bathtubs. A truly unique part of the house is a fern grotto off the dining room. This grotto has tropical plants and a small, trickling stream.

Who Lived in the Alfred Hocking House?

The house stayed with the Hocking family for many years. This was even after Alfred Hocking passed away in 1936. In 1947, Dr. and Mrs. Edmund Lee bought the property. After Dr. Lee died, the house became known as the Rose Chang Lee House. This was named after his widow, Rose Chang Lee.

A New Chapter for the House

Over time, the house needed a lot of repairs. Then, Rick Ralston, who started the company Crazy Shirts, bought it. He did an amazing job restoring the house. His hard work even won him an award in 1985 for "Ground-Up Restoration." Ralston also updated the house with new plumbing and air-conditioning. Later, he sold the house to a local developer. This developer's children went to the nearby Punahou School. In 2006, the house was put up for sale again.
