Nadar - Alfred Fouillée 1
Alfred Fouillée, a French philosopher.

Alfred Jules Émile Fouillée (born October 18, 1838 – died January 16, 1912) was a French philosopher. A philosopher is someone who studies big questions about life, knowledge, values, and how we should live.

Life of Alfred Fouillée

Alfred Fouillée was born in a place called La Pouëze, in Maine-et-Loire, France. He started his career by teaching philosophy at different schools. From 1864, he was a philosophy professor at high schools in cities like Douai, Montpellier, and Bordeaux.

In 1867 and 1868, he received special awards from the Academy of Moral Science. These awards were for his important work on ancient Greek thinkers, Plato and Socrates. In 1872, he became a master of conferences at the Ecole Normale. He also earned his doctor of philosophy degree. This was for his two studies on free will and how ideas work.

Working very hard for the next three years made him unwell. His eyesight also suffered. Because of this, he had to stop being a professor. During this time, he wrote books about Plato, Socrates, and the history of philosophy.

After he retired, he developed his own philosophical ideas. He tried to connect different ways of thinking. He wanted to bring together the idea that our minds create reality with the scientific view of the world.

What are "Idées-Forces"?

Fouillée developed a special idea called "idées-forces." This means "idea-forces." He wrote about this in books like L'Evolutionnisme des idées-forces (1890). He also wrote La Psychologie des idées-forces (1893) and La Morale des idées-forces (1907).

His idea was that our thoughts and ideas are not just in our heads. They have a power to make things happen. They can push us to act and make changes in the world. He believed that ideas can become real actions.

Fouillée's wife was Augustine Fouillée. She was also a writer. She was known by her pen name, "G Bruno." She wrote many books for children. Her most famous book was Le Tour de la France par deux enfants (1877). It was an educational novel and a school book. Augustine was also the mother of another philosopher, Jean-Marie Guyau, from a previous marriage.

Alfred Fouillée lived at the Les Colombières estate in Menton. This estate was later redesigned by Ferdinand Bac. Fouillée passed away on January 16, 1912, in Lyon.
