Alfréd Schaffer (born February 13, 1893 – died August 30, 1945) was a famous Hungarian football player. He was known for playing for many different football clubs – a record 21 teams in 15 years! He was also a successful football manager later in his life.
Playing Career
Alfréd Schaffer was born in Budapest. In 1915, he joined a team called MTK Budapest. He helped his team win the league championship three times in a row, in 1917, 1918, and 1919. In two of those seasons (1917–18 and 1918–19), he was the best goal scorer in Europe, scoring 42 goals one season and 41 the next. From April to September 1920, Schaffer also played for FC Basel. He played one championship game and 19 practice matches, scoring 27 goals in total for them.
Managerial Career
After he stopped playing football, Alfréd Schaffer became a football manager. He coached many big teams. Some of these included 1. FC Nürnberg (where he had also played as a player), A.S. Roma, and Ferencváros.
In 1938, he had the honor of coaching the Hungarian national team at the 1938 FIFA World Cup. This is a very important tournament for football teams around the world.
In 1940, Schaffer became the manager of A.S. Roma in Italy. He led them to win the 1941–42 Serie A title, which is the top football league in Italy. He left the club in 1942.
Alfréd Schaffer passed away in Prien am Chiemsee, Bavaria, on August 30, 1945.
