A Look at Algarrobo's History
How Algarrobo Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States in 1898. This happened because of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States government took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 877 people lived in the Algarrobo barrio at that time.
