A Look Back: History of Algarrobo
The story of Algarrobo likely began a very long time ago, possibly during the Stone Age. The first clear signs of people living here date back to the Copper Age.
Later, the Phoenicians, who were ancient traders and sailors, had an important settlement here. Places like the Trayamar burial site and the remains found at Morro de Mezquitilla show how important this area was to them in the West.
When Arab people arrived in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) a long time ago, Algarrobo grew a lot. Berber people from Algiers helped found the town further inland. They brought new crops like almonds and raisins. They also started small silk-making businesses.
Cool Places to See in Algarrobo

Church of Santa Ana
This church was built in the 17th century. It is a key part of the town's history and a place where people gather.
Ermita de San Sebastian
This small chapel, called an ermita, dates back to the 17th or 18th century. In 1976, it had to be rebuilt because it was at risk of falling down. It was carefully restored to look like its original self.
Ermita de las Angustias
You can find this chapel at the northern exit of Algarrobo. Even though it might not be the fanciest building, it is very special to the people of the town. It is a tradition for all brides in Algarrobo to bring their wedding flowers here.
