Alger (/ˌældʒər/ AL-jər) is a small, unincorporated community in Arenac County, Michigan. An unincorporated community means it's a place with people living there, but it doesn't have its own separate local government like a city or town. Alger is part of Moffatt Township. History of Alger
Alger began in 1883. It started as a station where two important train lines met. These were the Michigan Central and the Detroit, Bay City & Alpena railroads. A post office opened in Alger on March 7, 1884.
The community was officially planned out in 1884. This planning was done by John Stoughton Newberry and Russell A. Alger. The community was named after Russell A. Alger. He later became the 20th Governor of Michigan, which is the top leader of the state.
